With the series even at 2-2, Game 5 between the Toronto Raptors and New Jersey Nets at the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday should be quite the event. TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on the series so far. 1. Improved Offence: Though the Raptors struggled mightily in the second and third quarters, they were impressive in the first and fourth and overall took much better care of the ball and exhibited better shot discipline. That must continue against an outstanding defensive opponent. Got the ball swung to the weakside and made the defence shift enough to get quality looks and just seemed less rattled and a little more sure of what they wanted to accomplish per trip. Still room for lots of improvement and theyll need it; will take the Nets best punch so far in this series on Wednesday. 2. Defensive Details: Much better job guarding the ball straight up and limiting straight-line drives and easy paths to the paint. Have to stay sound and stop closing out on perimeter guys out of control and going for pump fakes that lead to drives. Better job here. Really worked hard to contest shots. Help was very good in the fourth quarter and the rotations and communication were sound. 3. Red Alert: Game 5 and youre all even. Needless to say the pressure and excitement will be there for both sides. It comes down to this the next 48+ hours: which team stays focused better on the task at hand? Which team really locks in better on the game prep and the subtle adjustments you have to make per game? Do you stay true to your fundamental habits and execute them? At this point, youve played each other eight times already so theres no secrets. Whos going to be better and can sustain the edge? Lastly, with all the hype/hoopla surrounding you, are you able to maintain your poise/composure and get at the task at hand. Not easy for either side yet this is what makes the games so much fun. 4. Joe Johnson: Raptors did a nice job getting the ball out of his hands and making him work for his shots. No Landry Fields and in spite of John Salmons not scoring, his effort was outstanding in this matchup. He fronted him at times in the mid/low post and whomever was guarding Johnson stood their ground better and the help/double came quicker and harder. An absolute must in Game 5. Hell be looking to make a statement early and often to re-establish himself. 5. Raptors Square: What a scene! Believe me. NBA folks along with players and agents take notice of whats going on outside the ACC and compare it to the level of passion/interest they see in the other 29 NBA markets. Were in the recruitment and retention business; every little bit helps gain the upper hand on your opponent. The level of passion and love for the sport that people see from fans all across Canada right now will help Raptors ownership and management in so many ways continue to improve the organization on many fronts. You the fans are making your own statement. Keep it up. Thanks! Russia has spent about $51 billion to deliver the Sochi Olympics, which run Feb. 7-23, making them the most expensive games ever, even though as a winter event it hosts many fewer athletes than summer games do. Ryan Kalil Jersey . Noah finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in 34 minutes. He was headed for his fourth triple-double of the season, but sat down with about three minutes left because of the lopsided score. Kirk Hinrich scored 19 points for Chicago, going 5 for 6 on 3-pointers, Carlos Boozer added 18 points, D.Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday the club has signed midfielder/defender Maurice Edu to a multi-year permanent contract. Edu joined the Union prior to last season on a one-year loan from Premier League side Stoke City, but the Union have moved to make the deal permanent. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Mo is an extremely important player to our organization and were excited that he will be in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future, said Union technical director Chris Albright. We look forward to him helping lead us toward building a winning team. Edu, 28, quickly became a force in the Union lineup in 2014, sstarting 31 games and adding three goals and two assists en route to being named to the MLS All- Star team.dddddddddddd He ranked third on the team in minutes played (2789), and memorably scored the Unions lone goal in the U.S. Open Cup Championship against Seattle Sounders FC. I couldnt be happier to permanently return to Philadelphia and to play in front of our great fans, said Edu. I believe in this teams future and am excited to be an integral part of that. Prior to his time in Philadelphia, Edu spent four seasons with Scottish powerhouse Rangers FC, winning three Scottish Premier League championships and helping lead the club to four UEFA Champions League appearances. NEWARK, N.J. -- After watching the Colorado Avalanche struggle to generate offence for more than 57 minutes, coach Patrick Roy rolled the dice and pulled goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere with 2:30 left in regulation against the New Jersey Devils. The gamble paid off big. PA Parenteau scored with 1:47 left in the third period and Ryan OReilly had a power-play goal 28 seconds into overtime to give the Avalanche a stunning 2-1 victory Monday night. "Why wait?" Roy said after Colorado extended its winning streak to four games and posted its 13th win in 17 games (13-3-1). "Who said we have to pull the goalie with 1 minute in the game. I thought that was the right time and I thought we started generating more offence. I thought they were tired and it was a great window of opportunity there." Once Giguere went to the bench, the Avalanche mounted constant pressure and Parenteau knotted the score by deflecting a shot by defenceman Tyson Barrie past goalie Cory Schneider. That deflated the Devils and their fans. Michael Ryder made a bad play a minute later and defenceman Andy Greene slashed Matt Duchene to prevent a breakaway with 42 seconds left in regulation. The man advantage carried into overtime and OReilly ended it by tipping Duchenes pass by Schneider for his 21st of the season. "Tonight we showed great resilience," OReilly said. "We stuck with it the whole game. That was a big play by PA Parenteau tying the game, and it gave us a ton of momentum going to OT." It marked the third straight game in which New Jersey has given up a late goal to force overtime. The Devils have lost their last two. New Jersey easily could have had a bigger lead, with three shots hitting the post and another stopping on the goal line. "Its unlucky until it keeps happening over and over and over again," coach Pete DeBoer said. "I dont know. I dont know if its unlucky." Fourth-line wing Ryan Carter scored in the first period for New Jersey, which cant afford to keep giving away points if it wants to make the playoffs. "Tonight for me the story is we have to find a way to get a second and third goal," DeBoer said. "We got a goal from our fourth line, which is a bonus goal. We had enough chances to get five. You let anybody hang around in this league long enough, bad things happen and thats the story lately." Giguere finished with 27 saves in winning for the first time since starting the season 7-0. He also had the iron working for him. "Ill take a little luck now -- I need it," Giguere said. "I did get lucky a few times tonight. We worked hard enough to get the two points at the end." Schneider, who had the NHLs second-best goals-against average (1.91) entering the game, only had to make a few good saves until the final minutes. His best stops came on a chance in close by rookie sensation Nathan MacKinnon in the first period and another in close by OReilly in the third. The Devils goalie also was a little lucky. A third-period power-play shot by Gabriel Landeskog hit off defenceman Bryce Salvador and went just wide of the net. But the Avs finally found the answers late. Carter got his fifth goal of the season on a quick counterattack after Duchene lost the puck at the blue line in the Devils zone. Stephen Gionta carried the puck into the Colorado zone and fed Steve Bernier, who found Carter coming late for a shot that beat Giguere. Given a rare start with Semyon Varlamov getting the night off, Giguere had help from the iron all night. Michael Ryder hit the post with 12:30 left in the first period and Dainius Zubrus deflected a shot by Mark Fayne off the post with 4 seconds left in the period. Zubrus also clanged one off the post on a short-handed shot late in the second period, and Jaromir Jagr had a shot that stopped on the goal line early in the third. NOTES: Devils D Anton Volchenkov missed the game with a lower-body injury sustained against Nashville on Friday night. ... Three days after getting routed 8-1 on home ice by the Calgary Flames, the Oilers welcome one of the top teams in the Western Conference tonight, the San Jose Sharks. You can see all the action on TSN beginning at 9:30pm et/6:30pm pt. Jeff Petry had the lone Edmonton goal and Viktor Fasth yielded five goals on 16 shots before getting lifted just over seven minutes into the second period against Calgary. Ben Scrivens allowed three goals on 15 shots in relief for the Oilers, who have dropped their past two after opening a six-game homestand with last Tuesdays win over Nashville. "I apologize to the fans who had to watch that," Edmonton head coach Dallas Eakins said. "It was painful on the bench and painful for our great fans." Forward Nail Yakupov missed his third straight game due to injury and is doubtful to return tonight. Scrivens will start again tonight for the Oilers. Fasth suffered a neck injury in practice on Monday when he collided with teammate Anton Lander. He had to be helped off the ice and Edmonton recalled goaltender Laurent Brossoit from the American Hockey League on an emergency basis. Fasth did not skate with the team on Tuesday. Scrivens was stellar the last time he faced the Sharks on Jan. 29, setting an NHL record for the most saves in a regular-season shutout as he turned aside 59 shots in a 3-0 win.dddddddddddd The victory by the Oilers snapped a six-game slide to the Sharks and four-game skid at home in this series. Though San Jose lost its second game in a row on Monday night, both losses came in a shootout and the point gained last night versus the Calgary Flames was enough to lock up the Sharks 10th straight playoff appearance. With 101 points, the Sharks are two ahead of the idle Anaheim Ducks for the top spot in the Pacific Division, but San Jose has played two more games. San Jose got a goal from James Sheppard in last nights 2-1 setback to the Calgary Flames, while backup goaltender Alex Stalock made 26 saves through overtime as the Sharks fell to 8-1-3 in their last 12 games. "It was probably an inevitability," said Sharks coach Todd McLellan of clinching a playoff spot. "There is satisfaction in clinching. Thats one of the goals that we set out to do and theyve accomplished that. It wouldve been nice to get the two points, obviously were in a heck of a race for other things, so thats a little bit disappointing, but we got to move on." San Jose did see forward Logan Couture exit early due to a lower-body injury suffered after blocking a shot. McLellan said that Couture is okay, but it was unknown if he will be able to play tonight. Antti Niemi is likely to return to net tonight for San Jose and is 7-1-1 lifetime versus the Oilers with a 2.27 goals against average. SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Major League Baseball is getting a new tool to verify the ages and identities of players from the Dominican Republic. More than 10 per cent of the players in the majors are Dominican. There have been a few known cases in which players signed contracts after using fake documents that gave wrong names and ages. The president of the Dominican Central Electoral Commission says league officials will now be able to access its national database of names and biometric data. A strong goaltending performance for the Flyers, Crosby back on track, Zucker snipes for the Wild and a Stephen Weiss sighting; Fantasy tips and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking. HEROES Steve Mason – Recorded a 46-save shutout for the Flyers before losing in the shootout against the Islanders. Mason is up to a .923 save percentage on the season and has a .921 save percentage in 81 games with the Flyers; remarkable considering he had a .903 save percentage in 232 games with Columbus. Considering that hes toiling for a team with defensive issues (25th in the league in shot attempts allowed per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play), and injuries on the blueline pretty much all season, Mason has to play well for the Flyers to remain competitive. Crosby and Malkin – After a tough weekend against the Islanders, Sidney Crosby was in on every Pittsburgh goal, putting up a goal and two assists, in a 3-2 overtime win over Boston Monday. Crosby’s three-point night moved him into a tie with Philadelphia’s Jakub Voracek for the scoring lead, with 29 points in Evgeni Malkin scored a pair of goals, including the winner and Kris Letang chipped in a pair of assists. Jason Zucker – The Wild winger scored a pair of goals and had 11 shot attempts (9 SOG) in Minnesota’s 4-1 win at Florida. The 22-year-old started the season on the fourth line, but is tied for second on the team with eight goals and, with seven coming at even-strength, his goals-per-60 production is among the best in the league. Among skaters with at least 200 5-on-5 minutes: 5-ON-5 GOALS PER 60 PLAYER TEAM GOAL/60 Rick Nash N.Y. Rangers 2.69 Tanner Pearson Los Angeles 2.17 Tomas Tatar Detroit 1.95 Tyler Seguin Dallas 1.94 Vladimir Tarasenko St. Louis 1.83 Jason Zucker Minnesota 1.74 Max Pacioretty Montreal 1.66 Nick Bonino Vancouver 1.66 Marcus Johansson Washington 1.65 Nikita Kucherov Tampa Bay 1.65 ZEROES Laughton, Lecavalier – Both young and old Flyers forwards had trouble against the Islanders, getting less than 20% of the even-strength shot attempts. Laughton, playing in his fourth game of the season, was no the ice for four shot attempts for and 18 against (18.2%) and Lecavalier was barely better (4 for, 17 against, 19.1%). Jared Cowen – The Senators defenceman continues to struggle this season and, specifically, had a rought night at Detroit, stuck in the defensive zone (3 shot attempts for, 17 against, 15.0%) for most of the game. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Stephen Weiss – Scored a pair of goals for Detroit in a 4-3 win over Ottawa. It’s been a rough road for Weiss, who had three goals in 44 games since the start of the 2012-13 season, but he made the most of his opportunity to play alongside Darren Helm and Tomas Jurco. Jayson Megna – The 24-year-old winger made his season debut with the Penguins, playing 8:39 against Boston, with Zach Sill scratched from the lineup. Megna had 12 points (9 G, 3 A) in 17 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. Alexander Khokhlachev – Played just 2:53 against Pittsburgh Monday, his third game of the season with the Bruins. SHORT SHIFTS Islanders G Jaroslav Halak stopped all 21 shots he faced against Philadelphia…Senators D Erik Karlsson and C Kyle Turris each had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 loss at Detroit. With 16 points in 20 games, Karlsson is tied for fourth in scoring among defencemen. FIRSTS Joe Morrow – Drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round in 2011, Morrow scored his first career NHL goal against Pittsburgh, for Boston, in the Bruins’ 3-2 overtime loss Monday. David Pastrnak – Called up to Boston, the 2014 first-round pick played 7:53 and had solid possession stats (9 shot attempts for, 4 against, 69.2%) in his small-sample NHL debut after scoring 18 points (5 G, 13 A) in 17 AHL games. FANTASY FOCUS There are seven games on the NHL schedule tonight. Here are some players that you may want to consider for your lineup: Jake Muzzin – The Kings blueline is on fire, with 10 points (1 G, 9 A) in the past eight games, after none in his first seven games of the season. Justin Schultz – It’s tough times around the Oilers these days and Schultz’s defensive issues remain a concern, but he’s also been a solid enough point producer with four in the past five games. Sam Gagner – Following a miserable start to the season, which included four points in his first 16 games, the Coyotes centre has five assists in the past six games and, with Martin Hanzal hurt, has played more than 19 minutes in each of the last three. Sami Vatanen – I’ve been beating this drum for most of the season, but the Ducks’ power play quarterback continues to produce, ranking third among defencemen with 18 points after posting 11 points (2 G, 9 A) in the past nine games. Miller is slated to earn $9.754 million in 2015, the final year of his rookie deal, though the salary is guaranteed for injury only. The move was not unexpected, as the 25-year-old has emerged as one of the leagues premier pass rushers since being taken by Denver with the No. 2 overalll pick of the 2011 draft.dddddddddddd Miller racked up 11 1/2 sacks as a rookie, then tallied 18 1/2 along with six forced fumbles while earning first team All-Pro honors in his second season. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, Thursday nights Bruins-Blackhawks game had a goal by Patrice Bergeron initially waved off by the referee, but video review clarified it was a good goal. The situation had Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford scramble behind the net, lose the puck to Brad Marchand, who quickly threw it out to Bergeron who one-timed a shot at the net, and in. During this time, Crawford pushed the back of the net up as the puck crossed the goal line, between the posts. I understand the ruling was that it is a goal as the net didnt come off its post moorings. The question I have, is what if Crawford completely knocked the net off, on his own, as the puck went through? According to the video ruling, they indicated "because the posts remained in place, it was a goal." If the posts didnt remain in place, and the puck went in, wasnt there a rule in place that allows the goal, if the defending team knocks the net off on their own? I know this is also a delay of game penalty but, in a shooting situation, would this have counted, if Crawford knocked the net off just before the puck went in? Thanks, Louie Melissis from Whitby Hi Louie, Once the referee on the goal line waved off an apparent goal scored on a Patrice Bergeron shot that entered the net from the front position and immediately exited under where Corey Crawford had tipped the goal frame forward, the other on-ice officials quickly gathered to share their perspective on the play. During this conference it was determined (and convinced the ref that initially waved it off) that a good goal had resulted and the initial call on the ice was reversed. Video review was then initiated and it was confirmed that the puck did cross the goal line and that the goal frame was considered in its proper position as spelled out in Rule 78.4. (The goal frame shall be considered in its proper position when at least a portion of the flexible peg(s) are still inside both the goal post and the hole in the ice.)  Under Rule 38.4 (Situations Subject to Video Review), the video goal judge (Situation Room) is allowed to rule that the puck crossed the goal line and did so prior to the goal frame being dislodged under subsections (i) and (ii). If however, Crawford had knocked the net completely off the moorings prior to the puck crossing the goal line, the video goal judge could only advise the referee that the net was off the mooring prior to the puck crossing the goal line. The resulting verdict through the review process could only be "no goal". Louie, situations subject to video review aside, the referee can award a goal under Rule 63.6 when he determines that the goal post is displaced, either deliberately or accidentally, by a defending player, prior to the puck crossing the goal line between the "normal" position of the goalposts. We saw Cam Atkinson of the Columbus Blue Jackets awarded a goal under this rule in their big win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. For a goal to be awarded, the goal post must have been displaced by the actions of a defending player, the puck must have been shot (or the player must be in the act of shooting) at the goal prior to the goalpost being displaced, and it must be determined that the puck would have entered the net between the normal position of the goal posts. On this play, if Crawford had knocked the net completely off its moorings (accidentally or otherwise), it would have required a similar conference by the officials to award a goal since the ref closest to the net did not think that the puck had crossed the line between the goal posts! Video review would not be able to assist them in making this call since it is not reviewable and therefore must be determined by the referee(s) on the ice. I am quite sure the same verdict would have eventually been rendered on the ice and a goal would have been awarded to Bergeron. Boston is really bringing their "A" game at the absolute perfect time of the season. The Caps and Flyers draw the Bruins this weekend in afternoon games. Huge points for playoff standings are on the line this weekend with several meaningful 4-point games; Leafs, Flyers, Blue Jackets, Caps, Wings, Minnesota, Phoenix, Dallas, Vancouver just to name a few!   Have a great weekend everyone and enjoy the exciting playoff race. Cassius Marsh Jersey .J. Its the games against the leagues struggling franchises that have proved to be an issue.(SportsNetwork.com) - Six years ago, Danny Briere spurned the Montreal Canadiens in favor of signing with the Philadelphia Flyers. Fast-forward to the present and Briere is finally in a Habs jersey. Hell try to lead his club to a victory over his former employer on Saturday night when the Canadiens play host to the Flyers. You can catch all the action live on TSN Radio 690 Montreal at 7:00pm et. Briere said hes happy that his first game versus the Flyers comes early in the season and at home. "I guess that makes it a little bit easier on the preparation because for me, personally, its not a normal game," he told Montreals website. "Youre facing your ex-teammates. I have a lot of friends there. Itll be a little tougher, but I really believe that playing it in Montreal makes it a little easier." Briere made his regular season debut with the Habs in Tuesdays 4-3 loss to Toronto. He had four shots and was held without a point as the Canadiens failed to hold a 2-1 lead after the first period. Lars Eller scored twice and also assisted on Brendan Gallaghers goal, while Carey Price made 34 saves on 38 shots faced. Torontos eventual winning goal came minutes after Montreal enforcer George Parros was carted off the ice on a stretcher following a fight with Colton Orr. Parros suffered a concussion when he was taken down by Orr during the fight and landed face-first on the ice. "Its not easy after that incident to get back into the game, but we tried to use that as fuel to get another goal," said Eller, who scored his second goal with 2:22 to play. Parros was released from the hospital Wednesday morning and is sidelined indefinitely. The Flyers also lost their season opener to Toronto, falling to the visiting Maple Leafs 3-1 on Wednesday. Brayden Schenn scored during a first-period power play, but the Flyers failed to score on six other opportunities with the man advantage. Vincent Lecavalier and Mark& Streit had assists on the goal in their Philadelphia debuts.dddddddddddd "Offensively thats the best weve looked in a while, but at the end of the day youve got to score more than one goal to win a game," said Laviolette. Steve Mason, acquired during the lockout-shortened season, got the start over free agent signing Ray Emery and made 22 saves. Emery could get the start in this game. "Its huge, I had a great meeting with (Laviolette) a couple of days ago. Thats when he told me I would be playing and its a huge honor to get the opening night start," said Mason. "Ray could have been there just as easily as I could so it was a great honor to have it and unfortunately we didnt get the win." The Flyers have won 10 of their past 14 versus the Canadiens, splitting two trips to Montreal last season. Following a productive three-plus seasons in Buffalo, Briere hit the free agent market in the summer of 2007 and drew interest from a number of teams. The Quebec-born forward, though, drew the ire of Montreal natives when he decided to ink an eight-year, $52 million deal with the Flyers. Briere netted 124 goals with 159 assists for 283 points in 364 games with Philadelphia, but had just six goals and 16 points in 34 games last season. He ran out of goodwill stemming from his 30-point playoff output during the Flyers run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010 and had the final two years of his contract bought out this past summer. That gave the 35-year-old the opportunity to sign a two-year deal with the Canadiens"He was a good player for us for the whole time I was here," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. "Certainly in the playoffs he made his noise and he made his noise really loud. You go back to some of the big series he had, the big run to the Finals, his line was an integral part of that. Its good that he landed somewhere and hes happy. Im sure hell be excited to play his old team." goals-against average tiedMIAMI -- Dee Gordon was a headache for the Miami Marlins for 11 innings at the plate, on the bases and in the field. Carl Crawford came off the bench to make his impact with a single swing. Crawford snapped a slump with a two-run pinch-hit homer in the 11th, and the Los Angeles Dodgers escaped several late-inning jams to beat the Miami Marlins 9-7 on Saturday night. Gordon drove in two runs, scored twice, contributed a defensive gem at second base and stole three bases to increase his total to 19, most in the majors. Hes 8 for 11 in the series to hike his average to .357. "Hes hitting .350, hes stealing bags, hes playing good defence," manager Don Mattingly said. "You cant really ask a whole lot more." Gordon became the first Dodgers player since at least 1914 to have five or more hits and three or more stolen bases in a game, according to STATS. The last major league player to do it was Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies in 2008. "Im just trying to help us win any way possible," Gordon said. Crawford echoed that sentiment. He was held out of the starting lineup because he was batting .185, and said the chance to circle the bases in the 11th was a "wonderful feeling." "When something like that happens, it uplifts you," he said. "Its a big lift for me, somebody looking for anything positive to get through the next day. To come through with a big hit like that and win the game, its definitely encouraging." Yasiel Puig hit a three-run homer for Los Angeles. The Marlins lost even though they tied a franchise record at Marlins Park with three home runs. They erased a 7-2 sixth-inning deficit but left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth, and left two on in the 10th. "We get a hit in any of those situations, and its over," manager Mike Redmond said. Juan Uribe walked to start the 11th against Carlos Marmol (0-2), and with one out Crawford hit his first homer. "Hopefully its something that springboards him," Mattingly said. "Thats a big hit." Marmol said he made a mistake by throwing the pitch down the middle. "He hit it far," Marmol said. "I feel bad because the team played well." The squandered chances doomed the Marlins, however. They went 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position. Paul Maholm allowed three runs in six innings, but the Dodgers endured some wobbly relief pitching. With closer Kenley Jansen unavailable because of a heavy recent workload, Chris Perez took the mound in the ninth inning trying to protect a 7-6 lead. He loaded the bases and then walked pinch-hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia on a 3-2 pitch with one out to force in the tying run. Perez then retired Christian Yelich and Derek Dietrich to send the game into extra innings. The Marlins had runners at first and second with no outs in the 10th, but Brandon League (1-1) pitched out of the jam. Chris Withrow loaded the bases in the eighth before striking out NL RBI leader Giancarlo Stanton on three pitches to end the threat. "It was seesaw, but you see how the guys battled back," Gordon said. The Marlins Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer in the seventh off Brian Wilson, whose ERA rose to 12.91. Jeff Baker, who came into the game 4 for 40 this season, and Jeff Mathis both hit their first home run for Miami. The power surge compensated for a poor outing by Jacob Turner, who was activated from the disabled list before the game. He gave up nine hits and six runs in four innings. Notes: Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (strained back) threw a bullpen session before the game and is scheduled to come off the disabled list and start Tuesday at Washington. ... The Marlins had a scare during batting practice when ace Jose Fernandez collided in the outfield with strength and conditioning coach Ty Hill and both tumbled to the turf. The right-handed Fernandez took a shot in his left shoulder but said he wasnt hurt. ... Fernandez will try to improve his career home record to 13-0 Sunday in the series finale. RHP Stephen Fife, who started 15 games for the Dodgers in 2012-13, will be recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to start Sunday for LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder). Now it might be Raonic and Pospisils turn to do the same as Canadians. "I think theres a chance now with the guys in Canada here that they can do the same journey," Edberg said. "It should be a very exciting time for Canadian tennis going forward now." Considering Raonic beating Pospisil on Sunday in the Citi Open was the first all-Canadian final in the history of the mens tour, this journey is just getting started. What the match also illustrated is that Pospisil has a ways to go to catch up with Raonic, even though hes showing evidence of following him up the rankings. Pospisil, who will face Richard Gasquet in the first round of the Rogers Cup on Tuesday, is ranked 27th in the world after reaching his first ATP final. Raonic is back up to his career high of sixth after winning his sixth title. "For me, just seeing him, growing up with him and beating him when we were younger just motivated me a little bit and feeling I could do it, too," Pospisil said Monday. "I have a lot of areas of my game that I need to work on and fully develop to reach the top 10." Raonic is still the standard for Pospisil and this new generation of Canadian mens tennis players, but the Vancouver native is making strides, especially recently. A back injury contributed to a streak of eight consecutive losses from February through the French Open, and it took some time before Pospisil was 100 per cent again. "I got healthy for the first time this year the week before Wimbledon, and then I built a pretty good momentum," he said. "I felt every week I have been improving, and I feel like Ive got a good groove now." Pospisil got his groove back during doubles play at Wimbledon when he and American partner Jack Sock won it all. Raonic said that doubles run mightve given Pospisil "a perspective and a confidence to really be able to be playing this well that quickly." It has been what Pospisil has called a "pretty amazing couple of years" since being ranked in the 100s. The 24-year-old has improved so much in that period of time that Raonic and others cant help but take notice. "I think hes just constantly getting better, and most importantly you see hes playing consistently a lot of weeks making quarters and hes beating the guys he should be," said Raonic, who is set to play Wednesday night at Rexall Centre. "Thats the first steps you need to make. Thats how you can see that somebody is making progress in a developmental stage." Coming off a tiring week in Washington, Pospisil faces an immediate challenge at the Rogers Cup in the 12th-seeded Gasquet, whom he beat in the Citi Open semifinals. Pospisil used Monday to catch his breath becaause playing Tuesday is a difficult, quick turnaround.dddddddddddd "Im a little bit tired but I wont be tomorrow, just today," Pospisil said. "I didnt get much sleep last night or the night before. So right now Im not feeling great, but I know tomorrow Ill be fit." A third Canadian got into the winning act Monday night as wild card Peter Polansky beat 2013 Wimbledon semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz 7-6(5), 6-4. Polansky, who advances to face second-seeded Roger Federer on Tuesday night, didnt watch the Raonic-Pospisil match in Washington but credits their success as a bit of inspiration. "When youre around your peers and your peers start doing well, I think it pushes everyone and it gives everyone a little extra confidence saying, Im training with this guy, maybe Im beating him a little bit in practice and look where hes ranked," Polansky said. "I think for sure it gives us all a little confidence." Polansky grew up nearby but hadnt won a match at Rexall Centre since 2010. Even though Pospisil has just one victory in four career matches in Toronto, he flashed a wide smile Monday when the topic of playing back home in Canada was brought up. Flash bulbs went off before he explained that excitement about the Rogers Cup served as inspiration over the past couple of weeks. Pospisils lack of success here in the past is much more an indication of where he has been, not where he is as a player right now. Still, hes admittedly a work in progress. "Its an ongoing process over the course of the last 18 months and probably will be the same for years to come, just becoming a complete player all around and being aggressive and thats the key," Pospisil said. "I think thats where I made my biggest jump was when I started being less passive on the court and especially in big moments, and you have to kind of play aggressive and go for it, as all these guys do." With his big, intimidating serve, Raonic is at the point where hes measuring himself against the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Federer. Asked about his best matches of 2014, Raonic pointed to a loss to Djokovic as one of them. Its unlikely Pospisil will look back at Sundays 6-1, 6-4 drubbing at the hands of Raonic in the same way. No matter the opponent, his first final represented an early career milestone. "I would have liked to have been on the winning end of that, obviously, but yeah, its another special moment for me because it was my first final," Pospisil said. "The fact that I was playing another Canadian, Milos, made it more special for sure, I think especially for tennis fans in Canada. But, yeah, I think its more icing on the cake, I guess, for all the good results that we have been having these past few years in Canada." But the match did show a glimpse of what would be the best-case scenario for Pospisil and Raonic: more finals played between the budding rivals. Mike Richards will not be bought out by the Los Angeles Kings. Kings general manager Dean Lombardi told the Los Angeles Times in an interview Friday that Richards will remain with the team but must improve in training. "The biggest thing in the meeting with Michael - the important thing - is that he realized hes going to have to make some adjustments in his offseason training," Lombardi said.  The 29-year-old forward has six years remaining on the 12-year deal he signed prior to the 2008-09 season with the Philadelphia Flyers worth a total value of $29 million. A buyout would have cost the Kings $19.3 million over the next 12 years. In 82 games with the Kings last season, Richards scored 11 goals and added 30 assists. He would add three goals and seven assists in 26 playoff games as part of the Kings run to the 2014 Stanley Cup. Once the captain of the Flyers, Richards has seen his offensive production fall off in recent years. A 30-plus goal-scorer in 2008-09 and 2009-10, Richards has only once cracked the 20-goal plateau in Los Angeles. Lombardi said in the interview he would have to trust Richards in his promise to improve his conditioning and play in time for next season. "As long as he looked me in the eye and made that promise that he would make the commitment in the offseason …Essentially, I have to trust him. Once that deadline goes, were locked in," Lombardi said. Originally drafted 24th overall by the Flyers at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Richards has scored 174 goals and 292 assists in 657 career games with the Kings and Flyers. Richards was also a member of the 2010 Canadian Olympic team that won gold at the Vancouver Games. Ryan Kalil Jersey . Scherzer avoided arbitration in January, agreeing to a one-year deal that is reportedly worth $15.25 million. The Cy Young winner can become a free agent after the 2014 season. Talks with agent Scott Boras for a long-term deal continued through the spring, but were unsuccessful and the Tigers said Sunday that further discussions would not take place during the season. "The Detroit Tigers have made a substantial, long-term contract extension offer to Max Scherzer that would have placed him among the highest paid pitchers in baseball, and the offer was rejected," the Tigers said in a statement. Scherzer was 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 32 starts with the Tigers last year. He became the second Tiger in three years to capture the Cy Young, following 2011 winner Justin Verlander, who agreed to a five-year extension with a vesting option for 2020 last spring. "As we have reiterated, it has beeen the organizations intent to extend Maxs contract and keep him in a Tigers uniform well beyond the 2014 season," the Tigers statement continued.dddddddddddd "While this offer would have accomplished that, the ballclubs focus remains on the start of the upcoming season, and competing for a world championship. Moving forward there will be no further in-season negotiation and the organization will refrain from commenting on this matter." Scherzer will be entering his fifth year with the Tigers, who acquired him from Arizona as part of a three-team deal that sent Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees before the 2010 season. The 29-year-old right-hander has been a double-digit winner in each of his four seasons with Detroit and has a record of 64-30 with a 3.62 ERA in 128 starts as a Tiger. He was 9-15 with a 3.86 ERA in two years for Arizona. Overall, Scherzer owns a career mark of 73-45 with a 3.67 ERA and has 1,069 strikeouts in 1,019 innings in 174 games, all but nine of which have been starts. TORONTO -- Canadian rugby coach Kieran Crowley will be able to rely on some veteran help next month at the IRB Americas Rugby Championship in Langford, B.C. The Oct. 11-19 tournament features sides from Canada, Argentina, the U.S. and Uruguay. Sanctioned by the IRB, its goal is to develop domestic-based players in the Americas. Canada was runner-up at last years ARC, defeating Uruguay 28-10 and the U.S. 23-3 before losing to unbeaten Argentina 28-9. While Crowley has selected some young players, he has also named such veterans as Ray Barkwill, Nick Blevins, Adam Kleeberger, Jamie Mackenzie, Mike Scholz, Andrew Tiedemann, Conor Trainor, Sean White and Doug Wooldridge. Uruguay, ranked 32st in the world, will be bringing its full national team this year, according to Crowley, with an eye to preparing for its World Cup qualification showdown next year with the 18th-ranked U.S. Eagles. Like Canada, the U.S., will be using a domestic side at the ARC although Crowley says it looks stronger than the one the Americans fielded last year. Argentina, ranked 10th in the world, will be bringing a developmental side with its top players currently involved in the ongoing Rugby Championship tournament. The Eagles Select XV includes capped players Shawn Pittman, Phil Tiel, Nick Wallace, Toby LEstrange and Tito Lamositele. The Canadian rugby schedule this fall also includes the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia Oct. 12-13 while the 15-man national team hosts the New Zealand Maori in Toronto on Nov. 3 before heading to Europe for tests in Georgia, Romania and Portugal. The Maori game in Toronto falls outside the IRBs international window so Crowley will not be able to summon all his overseas pros. But he hopes to have most back for the November tour. "Were still dealing with a couple (of clubs), trying to get players released," he said. The sevens circuit continues Nov. 29-30 in Dubai and Dec. 7-8 in South Africa. Crowley is dangling an ARC carrot for his 15-man squad. "Theres still probably a couple of positions open for the November tour which these guys get a chance to put up their hands for," he said. Depth is needed at prop and loose forward among other positions, he added. The Canadian ARC squad was picked after Crowley and his staff carefully watched this summers Canadian Rugby Championship. It features eight members of the B.C. Bears and seven from the champion Ontario Blues, five from the Prairie Wolf Pack and three from The Rock. Young talent includes Jake Illnicki and Irish-born fullback Jack Fitzpatrick, who played for Canada in the Junior World Rugby Trophy. "The younger guys get a chance now to play at a higher level and see what its like," said Crowley. "Its a stepping stone for them." Not available for selection due to injury are Tom Dolezel, Jake Webster, and Sean Duke. Ontario Blues fly-half Liam Underwood is unavailable due to university commitments. --- Canada roster for IRB Americas Rugby Championship Kyle Baille, Castaway Wanderers, Charlottetown; Ray Barkwill, Niagara Wasps, Niagara Falls, Ont.; Nick Blevins, Calgary Hornets, Calgary; Alistair Clark, Baystreet RFC, Oakville, Ont.; Zac Coughlan, Swilers RFC, St. Johns, N.L.; Joe Dolesau, Burnaby Lake RC, Burnaby, B.C.; Jack Fitzpatrick, Dublin University Football Club, Dublin; Aaron Flagg, Abbotsford RFC, Abbotsford, B.C.; Kyle Gilmour, St. Albert Rugby Club, Edmonton; Micha Gorvorchin, Burnaby Lake RC, New Westminster, B.C.; Matt Heaton, SABRFC, Godmanchester, Que.; Jake Illnicki, Williams Lake Rustlers, Williams Lake, B.C.; Adam Kleeberger, Castaway Wanderers, White Rock, B.C.; Jamie Mackenzie, UVic Vikes, Oakville, Ont.; Duncan Maguire, St. Albert Rugby Club, St. Albert, Alta.; Ryan March, Abbotsford RFC, Abbotsford, B.C.; Adam McQueen, Calgary Hornets, Canmore, Alta.; Henry (Hank) McQueen, Balmy Beach, West Vancouver; Callum Morrison, UBCOC Ravens, Victoria; Mike Scholz, Castaway Wanderers, London, Ont.; Andrew Tiedemann, Castaway Wanderers, St. Albert, Alta.; Conor Trainor, UBCOB Ravens, Vancouver; Sean White, James Bay AA, Victoria; Jordan Wilson-Ross, James Bay AA, Alliston, Ont.; Doug Wooldridge, Lindsay RFC, Lindsay, Ont. Yes, Rafael Nadal will still be favoured by most to win the clay-court Grand Slam tournament yet again. He is, after all, 59-1 for his career at Roland Garros, winner of a record eight championships, including the last four. TSN and TSN2 will have live coverage at Roland Garros throughout the French Open starting with Day 1 coverage on Sunday, May 25 at 10am et/7am pt on TSN2. Still, if the 2014 tennis season to date is any indication, there could be some surprises in store when play begins in Paris on Sunday.dddddddddddd So far, there already was one new major champion, Stanislas Wawrinka at the Australian Open. And there has been a rather egalitarian feel to the spring clay circuit, with nine winners at nine tournaments. Then theres this: Nadals three losses on clay are the most hes had in a season since 2004.
